HELPING TO FIT YOUR NEEDS
AFOs (ankle foot orthosis) take time to get used to wearing. In order to reduce the risk of blisters and other skin irritation, a wear schedule is used which starts out slowly. It may take up to 2 weeks before the AFOs are able to be worn all day long. Your physician who prescribed the AFOs should tell you when and how long each day they would like them to be worn
AFO Wear Schedule Instructions:
- The first time the AFOs are worn they should be taken off after 1 hour and you will need to check the skin for any redness. Redness is normal, but it should go away within 30 minutes after you take the AFOs off.
- If the redness goes away within 30 minutes then you can wear the AFOs for 2 hours before taking them off again. At this time you should again check for redness and time how long it takes to disappear. If it goes away within 30 minutes you can then wear the AFOs for 3 hours at a time before checking for redness. Continue adding 1 hour each time and checking for redness or blisters when you take the AFOs off
- If at any point the redness does not go away within 30 minutes then you should not progress to the next length of wearing time. For example: If you have worn the AFOs for 3 hours and the redness takes 40 minutes to go away, then put the AFOs back on for 3 hours and check again when you take them off. Do not progress to 4 hours until the redness goes away within 30 minutes.
- If redness ever lasts more than 1 hour or if a blister is rubbed open, please call our office at (478) 474-8040 and let us know what is going on so that we can address any issues that may be present.
