The Process

It is important to us that you understand what is going on at each step along the way to getting your new orthosis or prosthesis, and some information about the process of making and fitting custom orthotics and prosthetics can be found in the bullet points below.

Prosthetics:

  • The first step in getting your new prosthetic limb is obtaining a prescription from your physician which we will need in order to begin any work.
  • From there we can then meet with you and begin discussing options and taking measurements and casts as needed to design your custom prosthesis.  This initial visit can typically be expected to last anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours.
  • The next step is the fabrication of your device which may take up to two weeks to complete.  During this time we will also be in contact with your insurance company to verify coverages and obtain any approvals needed.  You and/or your insurance company will not be billed for any services performed until the final device is delivered.
  •  An initial fitting appointment for a preparatory prosthesis will allow us to verify that the prosthetic socket fits well and will help you to achieve your goals.  You will be able to wear your preparatory prosthesis for one to two weeks to determine if any changes are needed.   This process may take longer for newer amputees as your limb volume may still be changing significantly.
  • Definitive prostheses are delivered only after a proper fit is achieved and you are completely satisfied with the device.  This appointment may also take anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours and will include an assessment of the fit of the device, how well it is aligned, and also how well it works for you in helping you to achieve your goals.
  • Follow-up appointments will allow us to continue assessing the fit and function of your new prosthesis over time.  During these appointments we will discuss what may or may not be working for you and we will make changes as needed to ensure your comfort and satisfaction.
